To create a separate game, navigate to the Half-Life root folder and create a new folder. SetupThe whole custom mods section will assume you're doing things in a separate game and not modifying core files. When dealing with individual files you should never have to do anything in Half-Life's root directory unless you're extracting files with the proper folder structure already created within the archive. All paths listed below are relative to the game folder, i.e. Whichever method you choose, you will need to know what files go where. I personally prefer the latter, so you can create different sets of mods without ever changing the main game files. There are two ways you can do this: 1) Replacing existing files in the valve folder and launching the game normally, or 2) creating a new game folder in Half-Life's root folder, putting the files in there, and launching the game with the -game parameter, as mentioned above. Mods can also be downloaded as single files that you can override base game resources with. If you are doing this through Steam, it will automatically detect the mod on the next startup, meaning you can skip this step and launch it directly from your library. To get these mods running, you need to launch Half-Life with the launch parameter -game, where is the name of the folder you just extracted. ![]() Keep in mind that most mods these days are made for the Steam version of Half-Life, so some mods might be incompatible with the CD version.
